Description
A very sweet nose of blackberry, figs and dates that perhaps lacks a little vigor. Again, the palate is very sweet with a very high extraction. A fine, slightly meaty nose with an odd scent of Marmite on burnt toast laced with liquorice and a touch of tar with blackberry, kirsch and fig. Very pure on the palate which has silky mouthfeel. Enjoy this organic wine, it is great.
History
It was difficult unearthing much information about this property although its genesis lies in the 1870's when proprietor Dominique Techer's great-great-grand-father gave his daughter a dowry of 7-hectares of Pomerol vineyard. There are 7-hectares in situ planted with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc with an average vine age of 35 years as of 2000. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 1992 and was certified in 1998. Just over 2000 cases are produced per annum, with a small 500 case production of a second wine 'Cadet de Gombaude' since 1992. There was a common theme of earthiness, as if Dominique Techer had seasoned the wine with a few grains of soil, so I suppose one could argue that there was a natural quality to the wine that might not exist if they did not practice organic methods.
